01 / Before You Start

What You Need Before Adding a Chatbot to WordPress

The Bitsa AI Chatbot plugin is a lightweight connector. The AI replies, knowledge-base training and lead management run on Bitsa AI's cloud, so your hosting does no extra work.

  • Administrator access to your WordPress dashboard, so you can install and activate plugins.
  • WordPress 5.0 or newer and PHP 7.4 or newer. The plugin is tested up to WordPress 7.1. You can see both versions under Tools → Site Health → Info.
  • A Bitsa AI account. Every new account gets a 7-day free trial with no credit card. Paid plans start at ₹299/month.
  • Your training material: the URLs of your key pages, your sitemap, and any PDFs, brochures, price lists or FAQ documents you already send customers.
  • Ten real customer questions copied from your WhatsApp chats, emails or call notes. You will use them to test the bot before launch.

02 / Step by Step

How to Add a Chatbot to WordPress: The 7 Steps

Steps 1, 2 and 7 happen in WordPress; steps 3 to 6 happen in your Bitsa AI dashboard.

Open Plugins → Add New

Log in to your WordPress admin. In the left menu, click Plugins, then Add New. The WordPress.org plugin directory opens with a search box at the top right.

Install and activate Bitsa AI Chatbot

Search for "Bitsa AI Chatbot". On its card, click Install Now, wait for the button to change, then click Activate. A new "Bitsa AI Chatbot" item appears in your left admin menu.

Create your Bitsa AI account

Go to bitsaai.com/signup and sign up, or log in if you already have an account. Your 7-day free trial starts without a card, and you land in the Bitsa AI dashboard.

Train the Knowledge Base

In the dashboard, open Knowledge Base. Add your website URLs, your sitemap, PDFs, text documents or FAQs. Training finishes in minutes, and the bot then answers only from this approved content.

Add your domain in Domain Access

Open Domain Access and enter your domain without https://, for example yourbusiness.in. This covers www and your subdomains. The bot only runs on domains you authorise, so nobody else can use your quota.

Copy your Client ID

Go to Branding → Embed code. Copy the Client ID shown there. If you find it easier, copy the whole embed script instead; the plugin can read the ID out of it.

Paste it in WordPress and save

Back in WordPress, click Bitsa AI Chatbot in the left menu. Paste the Client ID (or the full script) into the field and click Save Changes. Open your site in a new tab: the chat bubble is live.

03 / Training

How to Train the Knowledge Base Well

The bot answers from your own approved knowledge base, not from generic internet content, so the quality of its answers depends on what you feed it. Add sources in this order. It understands natural language and intent, so no rigid menus are needed, but the facts must exist in your content.

  • Your FAQ and policy pages first. Delivery, returns, refunds, cancellations, warranty and payment options are what visitors ask about most, and wrong answers here cost you trust.
  • Service, product and pricing pages. If prices live in a PDF rate card or product catalogue, upload that PDF too.
  • About and Contact pages with business hours, address, service areas and your WhatsApp number, so the bot can tell people how to reach you.
  • A short text document of "missing" answers. Write down the questions your team answers on WhatsApp every day that are not on the website, such as "Do you deliver on Sundays?" or "Is GST included?", and add it as a text source.
  • Your sitemap last, for breadth. Skip or remove old blog posts with outdated prices or offers so the bot does not quote them.

Re-train whenever prices, policies or services change. For a deeper guide on choosing sources, see how a chatbot trained on your website content works.

04 / Customise

Customise the Look, Lead Capture and Language

01

Branding without code

In the Bitsa AI dashboard, set the theme colour, launcher icon, welcome greeting and bubble position. Changes apply to your live site without editing code or updating the plugin.

02

Lead capture inside the chat

The bot collects a visitor's name, phone, email and requirements during the conversation, and each lead appears in your Bitsa AI dashboard for your sales team. More on this in our WordPress lead generation guide.

03

Hindi, Hinglish and 50+ languages

The bot detects the visitor's language and replies in it, across 50+ languages including English, Hindi and Hinglish. No separate setup is needed. See running a Hindi chatbot on WordPress.

04

WooCommerce product help

On WooCommerce stores, the bot helps shoppers find products, check details and add items to cart through the official WooCommerce Store API. Read the WooCommerce AI shopping assistant page for details.

05 / Before Launch

Testing Checklist Before You Go Live

  • Open your site in a private window on a phone and on a desktop. Confirm the bubble appears and does not cover your WhatsApp button, cookie banner or "Add to cart" bar. If it does, change the bubble position in Branding.
  • Ask your ten real customer questions. Where an answer is wrong or thin, fix the source page or add a line to your FAQ document, then re-train.
  • Ask a few questions in Hindi and Hinglish, the way your customers type on WhatsApp.
  • Ask something your content does not cover and check how the bot handles it.
  • Submit a test lead with your own name and number, then confirm it shows up in the Bitsa AI dashboard.
  • On WooCommerce, ask the bot to add a product to your cart and check the cart page.
  • Go to Settings → Privacy → Policy Guide and copy the suggested privacy-policy text the plugin adds into your own privacy policy.
06 / Troubleshooting

Chat Bubble Not Showing? Check These First

01

Domain not whitelisted

This is the most common cause. In Bitsa AI, open Domain Access and confirm the domain matches your live site, typed without https:// or a trailing slash. A separate staging domain needs to be added too.

02

Caching or optimisation plugin

If you use WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache, Autoptimize or a host-level cache, purge it after clicking Save Changes. Visitors may otherwise get an old cached page without the chatbot.

03

Cloudflare and Rocket Loader

The plugin is compatible with Cloudflare Rocket Loader, so you do not need to turn it off. If you cache HTML at Cloudflare, purge the Cloudflare cache as well. The plugin uses WordPress native async loading on WordPress 6.3+.

04

Settings not saved

Open Bitsa AI Chatbot in WordPress and check that "Show chatbot" is ticked and the Client ID is present. If unsure, paste the full embed script again and save.

07 / Control

How to Hide the Chatbot on Checkout or Other Pages

By default the chatbot loads site-wide. To keep the WooCommerce checkout distraction-free, add this developer filter to your child theme's functions.php or a code snippets plugin:

add_filter( 'bitsaai_chatbot_load_widget', function ( $load ) {
    return is_checkout() ? false : $load;
} );

Swap the condition for any WordPress conditional tag. For example, ( is_checkout() || is_page( 'thank-you' ) ) hides it on checkout and a thank-you page. Note that is_checkout() comes from WooCommerce; on a site without WooCommerce, use is_page() alone.

How to turn the chatbot off

To pause it, untick "Show chatbot" in the plugin settings and save. To remove it, deactivate the plugin under Plugins. Deleting the plugin also removes its settings, including on multisite networks.

08 / Avoid These

Common WordPress Chatbot Setup Mistakes

  • Training on the home page only. The home page rarely contains prices, policies or delivery details. Add the pages where those facts live.
  • Typing https:// in Domain Access. Enter the bare domain only.
  • Forgetting the cache purge. Everything looks fine when you are logged in, but visitors still get the cached page.
  • Running two chat widgets at once. Remove the old live-chat script or plugin so visitors do not see two bubbles.

Building with a page builder? The plugin works site-wide on Elementor sites too; see the Elementor AI chatbot guide.

09 / Frequently Asked Questions

WordPress Chatbot Setup FAQs

No. You install the Bitsa AI Chatbot plugin from Plugins → Add New, set up your knowledge base and domain in the Bitsa AI dashboard, and paste your Client ID into the plugin settings. Branding, greeting and bubble position are set in the dashboard. Code is only needed if you want to hide the bot on specific pages with the optional developer filter.

Yes. The plugin loads the chatbot site-wide through WordPress itself, so it does not depend on your theme or page builder and needs no Elementor widget. On WooCommerce stores it can help shoppers find products and add items to cart through the official WooCommerce Store API, and you can hide it on checkout with the developer filter.

The plugin adds one loader of about 16 KB gzipped, loaded asynchronously in the footer, so it does not block your page from rendering. The chat window itself loads after the page has loaded or when a visitor reaches for the chat. AI replies and training run on Bitsa AI's cloud, not on your hosting.

The Bitsa AI Chatbot plugin itself is free to download from WordPress.org. It connects your site to a Bitsa AI account, which runs the AI. Every new account includes a 7-day free trial with no credit card required, and paid plans start at ₹299 a month. Check the Bitsa AI pricing page for the current plans and what each one includes.

Setup needs no code. In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New, search for Bitsa AI Chatbot, then install and activate it. Create an account at bitsaai.com, open Knowledge Base and train the bot on your website pages, sitemap, PDFs or FAQs. Add your domain under Domain Access, copy your Client ID from Branding → Embed code, and paste it into the plugin settings. Before launch, ask it the questions customers ask you most and check the answers. If the chat collects names, phone numbers or emails, update your privacy policy: the plugin adds suggested text under Settings → Privacy → Policy Guide.

Bitsa AI understands and replies in 50+ languages, including English, Hindi and Hinglish (Hindi written in Latin script). It detects the language a visitor writes in and answers in the same language. If many of your customers write in another language, such as Marathi, test a few real questions during the free trial. Leads captured in the chat are recorded in your Bitsa AI dashboard, and on WooCommerce stores cart actions go through your own Store API. For any other tool you need connected, ask the Bitsa AI team before you rely on it.
